Today, in reading On the Rainy River, a short story in Tim O’Brien’s book of short stories about Vietnam, we discussed the job that he has during the summer he was drafted. He worked at a pig butcher plant hosing out pig carcasses. We also discussed that it was a metaphor.
A few days ago we discussed an extended metaphor (roads and traffic for how memory works). As homework, I would like you to extend the butcher plant metaphor. How far can you take that metaphor? Here are a list of details about that job from the story:
- Worked 8 hours a day
- assembly line
- removed blood clots
- heavy machine that sprayed water
- goggles
- leather apron
- smell of old bacon
- spray of blood/water mist
Assignment: Use a bridge map (see the example below) to extend the metaphor. Due in class tomorrow.
