THE HERO’S JOURNEY

Your description of one Inherit the Wind character’s Hero’s Journey was due on Thursday.  I have already looked at one paper that chose to follow Rachel as the hero.  I think Rachel is a good choice.  She has a Call that slowly builds up and happens before the play begins.  She crosses the Threshold when Bert is arrested and she is forced into a reality where she must choose between one life and another, a choice she avoids until the verdict is reached.  Her Challenges include Brady’s questioning, the disapproval of her father, and wrestling with her own conscience.  I think the Abyss happens for Rachel on the witness stand when she is broken by Brady.  She is Transformed after that experience as evidenced by her expressed understanding that exposure to difficult ideas doesn’t mean that she has to accept them or keep them away from others.  I think her Returnhappens when she leaves Hillsboro with Cates and is bearing the Gift of understanding.

This Week

You will have four class periods (Friday is a half day and I will not see you) to complete the Power Point presentation on Darwin.  The time will be yours to use.  Presentations will be made next week on Tuesday and Wednesday (see link above for details).
