ANTHEM
Your homework for last night was to be read to page 24 in Ayn Rand’s Anthem for today’s class. We had a good discussion centered around one of the themes of the book, the individual versus the collective. “Collective” is a term than Rand uses to describe the polictical and social focus on the group rather than the individual. I would suggest that Rand would distinguish a collective from a group, based on its treatment of the individual and whether the individual’s goals supercede the group’s.

It is very important to open our minds when discussing the ideas in this book. Not all of the ideas are one’s with which you will agree, but that does not mean that you cannot learn from them. Ayn Rand’s ideas about charity, for example, may be very different from your own.
