SIDDHARTHA
We finished the Little Buddha today and moved on to discuss Chapter Three of Siddhartha. Please read Chapter Four for tomorrow.
Some things to remember about Siddhartha’s meeting with the Buddha:
- He rightly decides that he must move beyond teachers and learn for himself, but that the Buddha cautions him. The caution is not an indication that there is anything wrong with this approach, but that he must take care of all approaches, not that he has chosen the wrong strategy, but that he must be wary of all strategies. This has to do with the idea of the middle path. Perhaps we might say that you must follow an extreme middle path.
- We noted the irony in that Govinda’s first step on his own path is to follow someone else.
- The Buddha is the real deal. He has achieved something in which Siddhartha is interested, but one cannot get there by following.
