GOTHIC SHORT STORIES

We are currently finishing The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.  For homework, please read the Wikipedia article that deals with the story by following the link above.  Please use the comment feature to post a piece of information that you learned about the story and why you found it interesting.  For example:

I thought it was interesting that the story is based on an older New York-Dutch tale.  It seems to me that this makes makes the tale very “American.”

TREE MAPS: You should, at this point, have your tree map completed (after a quick look in your network folders it appears that many of you have some work to do) with the following short stories (only Sleepy Hollow will be left to do):

  • The Cask of Amontillado
  • The Outsider
  • The Yellow Wallpaper
  • Where are you going?  Where have you been?
  • A Rose for Emily
  • Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge

It gives great horror story for kids its interesting that when someone tells of man getting head shot off and one looks for it that people start to see there fear come to life. I don’t think it was even seen but seen by our fear that we want to say we say it to keep our selfs insane. Its great horror for any time of year. It a true American story that became a ghost story for America’s people to believe or not.

I find it intriguing that a story of such length could have such a massive cultural impact on the world we live in. It is truly an American story, possibly the greatest. It has made its way onto radio, tv and films, and now the internet. The story is short, yet packed with some of the most legendary literature ever seen by society.

I think it’s pretty sweet that a school district was named after the main character in a classic book.

i thought it was interesting that the author based ichabod crane and katrina vantassel on people he knew, but the headless horsemen may have been based, in my opinion, on the army colonel he once knew
