Overview: There are three parts to the year long writing class. Preparation for the ELA Regents exam begins in September and lasts until students take the test in January. Preparation includes a review of writing strategies learned in previous years, introduction to Regents tasks, guided practice, and finally independent practice. The research paper lasts from February until the beginning of May and provides the students an opportunity to independently research a topic of their choice and synthesize the research into a writ. The year will finish with preparation for the American History essays in May and June.
Expectations: Students will be expected to complete homework and other assignments on time and conduct themselves in a manner which allows the class to function efficiently and maximizes their own engagement.
Grade 11/12 Homework Policy: Homework is due at the beginning of the class period. Late homework will not be accepted for credit. It should be noted that homework in the writing class generally consists of work that was not completed during class time and is part of preparing a final draft, or in preparing for a state test.
Grading: Final grades for each marking period are based on the following ratio:
-
Homework/Classwork – 40%
-
Final Papers/Written Pieces – 30%
-
Participation – 30%
Participation grade will be based on student preparedness, engagement in class activities and attendance.
